Aboriginal Power Cup

Aboriginal Power Cup
Power Community Ltd has joined forces with the Government of South Australia and Santos to run a unique program targeted at Aboriginal students – the Aboriginal Power Cup.

With a competitive football carnival as its centrepiece, the Aboriginal Power Cup focuses on engaging young people in education, promoting healthy lifestyle choices and developing teamwork, leadership and life skills.

Over 300 students from 25 South Australian schools will participate in the Aboriginal Power Cup, including the regional communities of Ceduna, Coober Pedy, Maitland, Marree, Murray Bridge, Port Augusta, Port Lincoln, Port Pirie and Whyalla.

The program commences in February and concludes in May with a three-day carnival at Alberton Oval. The Grand Final of the Aboriginal Power Cup will be played at AAMI Stadium on May 19th as a curtain-raiser to the Power v Kangaroos match which is also AFL Indigenous Round.

To reach the on-field final, teams must attend school, enrol in a 60-hour SACE Unit and form 9-A-Side male and female football teams. Working in their teams the students must complete a range of curriculum tasks including design of team uniforms and team songs, development of training schedules, appointment of team coaches and mentors, and activities to assist with goal setting, leadership and career development. All students who meet attendance criteria and the curriculum expectations travel to Alberton Oval for the three-day carnival.

The carnival includes over 90 games of 9-A-Side footy plus a career expo, team breakfast at AAMI Stadium, cultural activities and educational workshops. The Government of South Australia and Santos are major partners of the program, with support from Transfield Services and UniSA College.
