PORT ADELAIDE recruiters have selected an Under 18 MVP and West Australian Sandover medallist in the 2013 pre-season and rookie drafts.

Sam Colquhoun, Kane Mitchell and Justin Hoskin were selected to join the Power’s list during Tuesday morning’s drafts.

Colquhoun was voted the state’s most valuable player in the recent U18 national championships and joins the Power from SANFL club Central District.

National recruiting manager Geoff Parker told portadelaidefc.com.au that Colquhoun’s selection was a welcome outcome for the club.

"[Colquhoun is] a hard running defender who links up through the midfield with his ball movement and has good foot skills,” said Parker.

“He was voted SA MVP at the National Champs and selected to the All-Australian team in 2012.

“We were surprised he fell to this [pre-season] draft and are thrilled to have him on board.”

Colquhoun has trained with the Power as part of a nine-man group given permission to join the club’s main squad and will now occupy Port Adelaide’s remaining vacancy on the senior list.

His selection was a dream come true from the Barossa Valley local who grew up supporting Port Adelaide.

I’m honoured and over the moon with the opportunity," Colquhoun told portadelaidefc.com.au.

"I grew up playing footy and cricket pretty seriously, so any opportunity to pursue an AFL career as a job is awesome.

"It’s a huge thing to come to any AFL club, but I’ve grown up supporting the Port Adelaide Football Club as well, so there’s an added bonus as well as staying home."

The club exercised picks #5 and #20 in the rookie draft to select two mature age players.

West Australian Kane Mitchell, a 23-year-old from Claremont, was taken with pick #5 following an outstanding year with the WAFL premiers.

Mitchell won the Sandover Medal for the competition’s top player as well as Claremont’s own best and fairest award for a season that saw him kick 30 goals as part of a dominant premiership-winning team.

Parker described Mitchell as “a mature-age player who will add depth to our list.”

“We liked his speed and endurance mix and he had an outstanding season at Claremont including in the grand final,” he said.

“He’s an outside ball carrier with speed and that something we’ve been looking for this draft period.”

Port Adelaide also drafted its own SANFL player Justin Hoskin to the rookie list with pick #20.

Hoskin played to acclaim with the Magpies at both league and reserves level in the SANFL and was impressive in the club’s group of ‘train-on’ players.

“He’s a solid defender who can link-up through the midfield and use the ball well coming out of defence,” said Parker.

“All the boys that came out and trained did so really well, and displayed the traits we expect of a Port Adelaide player.

“Justin was impressive in the way he took to training with our group and was the best ‘fit’ for the type of player we need.”

Mitchell and Hoskin join 2012 rookies Darren Pfeiffer and Danny Butcher on the club’s rookie list.

AFL rules allow clubs to upgrade one player from the rookie list to its senior list regardless of club’s injuries.
