I’ve grown up in the Port zone, played with the Port Magpies and know all about the tradition, everything that’s come through it and I’m proud.
NEWLY listed rookie Justin Hoskin is Port Adelaide through and through.

It’s no wonder given his pedigree.

Hoskin has played for Port Adelaide’s SANFL side, the Magpies, since donning the famous black and white prison bars for the first time as a junior.

Growing up in the club’s local league recruiting zone north of Adelaide, Hoskin was picked up by the Magpies after impressing at junior district club Golden Grove.

Having played most of the 2012 season at the top level of SANFL football, he was invited to be part of a nine-player group training with the Power’s main squad in hope of being picked up in the pre-season and rookie drafts.

Port Adelaide's national recruiting manager used the club's final draft selection for the off-season to grant Hoskin the chance of a lifetime.

He told portadelaidefc.com.au of his surprise at being taken by the Power with pick #20 in the rookie draft.

But Hoskin won’t be put too far out of his comfort zone.

“It’s been a pretty good environment, it’s only across the oval so it’s not a big move,” he told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“It’s a pretty exciting move and I’m pretty keen to move forward and meet the boys and settle in.”

Emerging as a solid rebound defender with the Magpies in 2012, Hoskin says he hopes to provide the Power’s coaching staff with a flexible defensive option as a developing player next year.

“I can play tall or small - it doesn’t really bother me,” he said.

“I’m probably more of a running back and I like to carry the ball.”

Having spent a fortnight at the Power, Hoskin is now focussed on contributing to a club he knows has 142 years of success and tradition behind it.

The expectation that comes with that has not been lost on Hoskin, rather he sees it as something to be proud of.

“I found the boys very welcoming, training is pretty solid but I’m looking forward to giving it a real crack this year,” he said.

“It’s a club with such a great tradition behind it and history.

“I’ve grown up in the Port zone, played with the Port Magpies and know all about the tradition, everything that’s come through it and I’m proud to keep playing through it and help take this club to the next step.”
