Students from Le Fevre HS have spent a day at their local footy club exploring Maths and Science and their application to elite sport.

The Year 8 students were provided with the complete inner sanctum experience including a historical outline of the club and a tour of the elite facilities at Alberton Oval.

The students then participated in a range of tests including Agility, Broad Jump, Vertical Leap, and Sprint. Some of the tests were repeated with footballs to capture the change in performance.

The students spent the afternoon analysing the data and documenting how the data expanded their knowledge of each skill.

The students will spend the next two weeks using the data to find the overall ‘winner’ for the day as part of their major assignment for the year.

Power players Tom Logan and Cam O’Shea joined the group to discuss how important statistics were to the AFL industry.

The students were pleased to hear that the players enter each game with clear targets, and then analyse the data on Mondays to assess how they played.

The focus on Maths and Science in Sport has been supported by BP who provide funding to community groups who operate on the Eyre and Le Fevre Peninsulas.

Both Le Fevre HS and Power Community Ltd have received grants in 2014 and we thank BP – we are kicking goals together.
