Power captain Travis Boak has been nominated for the Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award, with the winner to be announced Monday night at the Brownlow Medal.

Travis is nominated for his outstanding work as an ambassador for the Childhood Cancer Association (CCA).

His work in 2014 has been highly regarded by staff, families and clients associated with the charity.

Each year the Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award honours the former Melbourne Football Club president and Brownlow Medallist who passed away in 2012, by awarding an AFL player who demonstrates outstanding leadership in the community.

Sam Ludbey-Stynes wife of the late Jim Stynes will award the Jim Stynes Award to the winner.

The four finalists for the 2014 Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award include Boak, Carlton vice-captain Kade Simpson, Geelong midfielder Mathew Stokes and West Coast Eagles defender Beau Waters.

The winner will receive $20,000 from the AFL to be donated to the charity or community program of their choice.

The submission to the AFL nominating Travis Boak included testimonials from many children living with cancer and their parents.

Travis has been a valued ambassador of the CCA for three years and regularly visits families in hospitals and at the Association’s base in North Adelaide.

Boak works directly with cancer patients at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, supports fundraising events and participates in campaigns aimed at raising awareness and vital funds.

The CCA is South Australia’s key childhood cancer support association.

It provides ongoing and practical hands on support for children living with cancer and their families.

In South Australia there is more than three hundred families who rely on the support of the CCA, but the Association receives no government funding and instead relies solely on the generous support of the community, to provide vital services and support to families in need.

We encourage all members and supporters to support Travis’s other team – the Childhood Cancer Association – and buy a ticket in the 2014 Channel 9 Telethon Distinctive Home & Land Lottery at www.childhoodcancer.asn.au.

We wish Travis all the best for Monday night at the 2014 Brownlow Medal.

The Brownlow Medal ceremony screens Monday 22 September at 7pm ACST on Channel 7.
