PORT Adelaide player development coach Stuart Cochrane says a four-quarter effort will need to be produced if the side is to continue its unbeaten run.

The Magpies ran out 38-point winners against North Adelaide in slippery conditions on Saturday afternoon in their first home game of this season.

But the win did not come without a fight.

Port Adelaide struggled to make the most of its opportunities in the first half and had a lapse in concentration during the final term, allowing North Adelaide to get within 28 points.

Despite notching up two wins from two games, Cochrane admitted there was still work to be done.

"It was a scrappy game (against North Adelaide), with some encouraging signs," Cochrane said.

"It ended up being a real arm-wrestle, but it was a hard-fought game that we are pretty proud to have got through and won comfortably in the end.

"It was frustrating that we were getting enough of the footy inside the contest but we weren't efficient with our ball use.

"(It’s a) credit to North who put us under pressure and we weren't able to get that real free-flowing game going and they stifled our ball movement.

"But we need to improve in that area to make sure we get better supply to our forwards."

He said the real test will be when the Magpies face arch rivals and last year's premiers Norwood in an ANZAC Round clash under lights on Friday night.

"We overused the ball at times and sometimes our midfield structure held up, but at other times during the day it didn't, so we have to improve on that," Cochrane said.

"We've got two wins on the board and that builds our confidence.

"Now we get an opportunity to play against Norwood, which is the best team in the competition, and we will get a good measure on how we've improved.

"We are looking forward to seeing how we hold up against Norwood and whether we've improved on last year."

Port Adelaide will play Norwood on Friday, April 24, at Adelaide Oval, at 7.10pm. Tickets are available at the gates.
