FOOTY season is nearly here, and you can build your 2016 first 22 as counts down the days to the start of the Power's next campaign.

So put your selector's hat on as we go through all the important positions to work out just who would feature in our readers' Round 1 starting line-up.

Small/Medium/Hybrid Defenders

There are plenty of forward options throughout Port Adelaide's list. The loss of Angus Monfries sees the Power lose 200-odd games of experience, but will create a competitive environment for its younger attack dogs to push for a spot.

Jack Hombsch

Third in the Power's best and fairest and leading the count at the halfway point of 2015, Hombsch's star has risen swiftly. Capable of playing on key forwards but also mixing it with the best off half-back, Hombsch is a genuine starter.

Alipate Carlile

Trimmed down again in 2015 and it showed with brilliant running out of defence to match his strong defensive duties - often on the opposition's No. 1 forward target. Injury cut his year short but he'll be back with a vengeance in 2016.

Jackson Trengove

Injury troubles impeded Trengove's year once again, but he stood up against some big time opponents and has a record of good efforts against some big names.

Tom Clurey

Filling the gaps last year, Clurey's development is coming along nicely. Now a senior SANFL player with plenty of upside heading into his fourth season at the club.

Logan Austin

Really strong, reliable and compliant in the SANFL during his debut year. Austin had surgery late last season to get his body right for 2016. A big year beckons.
