PORT ADELAIDE SANFL coach Matthew Lokan has described as “extremely disappointing’ his side’s performance against West Adelaide on Sunday.

The Magpies went down by 32-points at Alberton Oval and Lokan said his side was simply outworked across the ground.

The home side was well served by midfielder Will Snelling (34 touches, 5 marks, 8 tackles) while Jack Trengove (33 disposals, 7 marks, 7 tackles) and Trent McKenzie (27 touches, 8 marks, 11 rebound 50s) who returned from Shanghai only 24 hours earlier were also important.

“We got outworked for the majority of the day bar maybe a little patch at the start of the game and in the last quarter,” Lokan said.

“I thought Westies were outstanding with their ability to outwork us and their work rate showed with their ability to run and overlap out of defence.

The Bloods broke open the game with a half hour period late in the first term until late in the second when they kicked six out of seven goals, including five in-a-row.

The ‘Pies fought back with three straight in the last quarter but it was too late.

“We spoke about after the game about how we can’t have these lapses in the game where we are inconsistent.

“You do that at SANFL level and you get beaten by good opposition.

“I thought we overhandled the ball, especially through the middle of the ground which caused the turnover, or kicking to the opposition going forward inside 50.”

“We were under a lot of pressure from West Adelaide and that makes you over handball and their ability to get from contest to contest forced us to hand ball.”

Young AFL draft hopeful Izak Rankine caused the Magpies problems with his pace at half forward in the first half, but Lokan moved Cam Hewett onto him and the coach was full of praise for the youngster.

“I thought their small forwards were very good but Cam Hewett went to Izak Rankine in the second half and kept him to four disposals but Kaine Stevens was outstanding,” Lokan said.

“We tried to run with him in the third quarter but just still couldn’t get it done.

“All in all we got outworked by Westies today and we need to improve pretty quickly.

“We spoke about being honest in our review of the game and taking ownership of it.

“We know that was unacceptable and we need to move on pretty quickly.”

The Magpies will get their opportunity to respond when they host North Adelaide next Saturday.
