PORT Adelaide skipper Domenic Cassisi has capped his first year as skipper with the club by taking out Adelaide radio station 5AA's Max Basheer Medal for the Player of the Year.

The Max Basheer Medal is named in honour of Max Basheer AM, a former administrator with the South Australian National Football League (SANFL).

He was involved in a number of keys decisions affecting the SANFL in the 1970s - 1990's, ultimately leading to the inclusion of both the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide in the AFL. He was inducted into the SANFL Hall of Fame in 2003, and is also a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame, where he was the first South Australian football administrator to be included.

Dom's 2009 season saw him ascend to the captaincy, in which he only missed one game during the home and away season.

He amassed 470 possessions (188 kicks, 282 handballs), took 65 marks, laid a club-high 161 tackles, and booted 8 goals.
