The big defender has matured in recent seasons to become a reliable and trusted stopper deep in the Power’s backline. Carlile is nearly always handed the responsibility of shutting down the opposition’s biggest forward and coach Ken Hinkley knows exactly what the Fijian-born defender will give every week. Carlile missed three games late last season after injuring his hamstring, but returned to play a key role in the club’s finals run.

Background

  • Born to Fijian parents, Carlile was drafted to Port Adelaide from the Murray Bushrangers with pick 44 in the 2005 National Draft.

Timeline

2010

The Fijian key defender missed just one game through injury in 2010 and was rewarded for his terrific season by finishing third in the John Cahill Medal. His progress throughout the year saw him become one of the more reliable full-backs in the game , regularly able to stop the opposition’s key forwards from dominating the scoreboard. He added an attacking mindset to his game and developed throughout the year as a player capable of taking the opposition on and lead the Power’s rebound from 50.

2011

“Bobby” played on the best opposition forwards each week and performed consistently throughout the season. He suffered a hip injury which made it difficult to play at times in defence with the numerous defensive 50 entries against the Power. An emphasis on getting his body right in the post-season training period would serve this quality defender heading into the prime years of a footballer’s career.

2012

Carlile had a solid year with impressive performances against St Kilda, Essendon, and Hawthorn before being dropped ahead of the club’s Round 12 game against the Western Bulldogs for failing a skinfold test. He dominated for the next two weeks with SANFL team South Adelaide and was recalled against Geelong where he built towards a quality finish to the year with another good showing against the Bombers and West Coast.

2013

A consistent year for Carlile, playing 22 of a possible 24 games. Was playing 'sore' towards the end of the season, which affected his performance in two finals

2014

Carlile was ever-reliable in 2014 as the lynch-pin of the Power’s young defence. Working in partnership with Jackson Trengove, Carlile took the opposition’s key forwards most weeks and was rarely beaten. His absence from rounds 16-18 was a significant blow for the Power and showed just how important he is as a leader in the back six.

2015

His importance as the staple of the Power's backline was highlighted when a hip/back injury sidelined him from the final nine games of the year. His big frame and strong skills as a key defender were bolstered by a strong defensive running game.
