The tall forward’s defensive intensity is impressive for a player of his size, but Butcher’s kicking remains his biggest drawback. His attack on the football is also a highlight, enabling him to take big contested marks. He played five games last year, including the final four, and showed enough to retain his place on the senior list for another season.

Background

  • Butcher was drafted from the Gippsland Power with pick 8 in the 2009 National Draft.
  • His younger brother Danny is a rookie-listed midfielder with the Power.

Timeline

2011

Butcher played most of the year for Port Adelaide in the SANFL, before exploding onto the scene with two standout performances as a tall forward in Round 22 and 23. Against the Western Bulldogs he booted six goals before kicking four against the Bombers a week later. These performances saw him immediately draw the attention of shutdown defenders in the club’s inaugural game at Adelaide Oval.

2012

After such an impressive debut in 2011, Butcher found the going tougher from the start of his first round one clash but still managed to find the goals from all the tough angles and on the run. Dogged by hip complaints, he found himself out of the side recovering between rounds 9 and 12 before returning against Geelong and Adelaide halfway through the season. He went in for hip surgery after the Showdown and missed the remainder of the year.

2013

Butcher had a stop-start year due to injury and form. Played in the Power side in bursts and had an impressive outing against St Kilda, booting three majors. Managed just 8 games and 9 goals and underwent hip surgery at the end of the season

2014

Butcher played the first three games of the season for the Power, but was squeezed out of the side having failed to kick a goal against North Melbourne in Round 3. He was unable to force his way back into the AFL side but enjoyed a solid season in the SANFL – leading the Magpies’ goalkicking with 32 majors.

2015

Butcher played AFL in Round 1, but was dropped the following week and couldn't force his way back into the side until Round 20. He had solid SANFL form in the middle of the season and showed some really strong signs late in the year, playing the final four games and offering a good option up forward.
