Broadbent has a long-standing family connection to Port Adelaide, with his grandfather having filled the role of club podiatrist for the club in the AFL and SANFL for 33 years.

He grew up supporting the club in the SANFL and later AFL with Josh Francou his favourite player.

Having played his junior football at the local Henley Sharks, he was drafted from zoned club Woodville West Torrens in 2008.

TIMELINE

2010

Broadbent played eleven games in his second season at the club and found his place as a midfield utility in combination with an occasional running defender role. He demonstrated an aptitude to win inside ball and effect contests around the ground as he pushed his way into the side after playing the majority of the first thirteen rounds with his aligned SANFL side Woodville West Torrens. Finishing the season off with nine consecutive games, Broadbent’s performance was enough to show promise as a potential future midfielder.

2011

Broadbent played in a career-high 19 games during 2011 where his offensive, attacking game flourished in a utility role.
Through those 19 games, he showed promise as a quality player of the future but struggled to consistently find the uncontested football.

2012

Broadbent’s break out 2012 was unlined by a series of strong performances in the midfield, starting against Fremantle in Round 8 and running through to the mid-season bye. His highlight was setting up the match-winning goals against North Melbourne in Round 8, whilst he polled three Brownlow Medal votes for his game against the Gold Coast in Round 9. He finished equal second in the club’s John Cahill Medal count.

2013

After a breakout year in 2012, Broadbent was solid to start the year before his form began to dip leading into the bye. A move to half-back kick-started his year, with excellent showings in wins over Sydney and Collingwood. Broadbent's run and carry out of defence, as well as his ability to pinch-hit in the midfield, proved to be a real weapon for Ken Hinkley in 2013.

2014

For the third straight year, Broadbent played every game for the season and notched his 100th AFL game in Round 22 against Carlton. The raking right-footer has become a key cog in the Power’s back six, providing run and carry out of the defensive 50 and regularly ranking high in metres gained each game.

2015

2015 saw Broadbent's team role change slightly, moving upfield onto the wing as a running half-back, sometimes making his way into the centreline. A slight dip in form saw him miss his first AFL game in four years, following the Power's loss to Brisbane in Round 7. He bounced back to perform as a reliable, defensive workhorse.

2016

A consistent year saw Broadbent put into the Power's midfield after spending much of the year in defence. Finished sixth in the John Cahill Medal count and was generally one of Port's more consistent players.

2017

An ankle injury interrupted the defender’s season, limiting him to 15 games at AFL level. When he did play he was at his consistent best, averaging just shy of 19 disposals a game.

2018

The same ankle injury from 2017 meant Broadbent was restricted to just two SANFL appearnces for the year. In his second game for the Magpies in 2018, he injured his other ankle which unfortunately ruled him out for the rest of the season.
