His reputation as one of the game’s leading inside midfielders is astonishing given the early stage of his career. Wines’ brute strength is matched by great football intelligence and a maturity beyond his years. Appointed to the vice-captaincy in 2017 and seen as a likely successor to current captain Travis Boak in years to come.

TIMELINE

2013

Debuting in the opening round of the 2013 season against Melbourne, Wines proceeded to play every game of his first year in the AFL with notable performances against the Demons, Collingwood (both in Round 14 and the elimination final) and the Crows in Showdown XXXV. He received a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination in his first match and won the club's Gavin Wanganeen Medal as the best first year player under the age of 21.

2014

Wines continued to demonstrate his potential by playing every game of the 2014 season as a powerful inside midfielder capable of winning his own ball and providing excellent pressure around the contest. His prospects as a long-term staple in the Power’s midfield were done no damage by his consistency and impact, particularly during the club’s finals campaign.

2015

After playing 52 of a possible 52 games to start his career, Wines was struck down with a dislocated wrist in Round 3 against North Melbourne - ruling him out for a month. He returned in Round 8 to play the next ten games, getting straight back to the bull-like football he is becoming known for. Best-on-ground in three games, Wines' season ended prematurely after injuring his shoulder against the Saints in a contest with David Armitage.

2016

A strong return to form saw Wines narrowly miss the John Cahill Medal to triple-winner Robbie Gray. His form as a big-bodied inside midfielder was unquestioned as he again entered the ranks of the AFL's best 22 players under 22 years of age.

2017

A prolific season in the midfield saw Ollie Wines average more than 27 disposals a game in the 2017 – 14 of those contested. The inside-bull also kicked 15 goals, and was rewarded with the captaincy in the absence of Travis Boak for one game.
