Now the clear leader of the ruck division after the retirement of Brendon Lade, he played 20 of a possible 22 games in 2009 and was finished the season ranked third in the hits-outs to advantage for all AFL players. He also was a deserved recipient of the Showdown Medal for best-on-ground against the Crows in Round 6. He was rewarded for his consistency and leadership by being named Vice-Captain in 2010.
