Missed six weeks between rounds 13 and 18 with a hamstring complaint in a season again cruelled by injury. Finally broke into the side in round 21 against Hawthorn and vindicated his No. 8 selection in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft with a six-goal haul against the Western Bulldogs in round 22. Now that he has broken through at the top level, Butcher is expected to feature prominently as a key forward in 2012, but was on a modified pre-season program because of foot tendinitis. Has committed to the club by signing a contract extension at the end of 2011.
