KEN HINKLEY – Senior Coach

Ken Hinkley was appointed Port Adelaide senior coach in October 2012, capping a highly successful career an assistant coach with a number of AFL clubs and a coach in his own right with a number of Victorian club teams.

Hinkley – a dedicated and hard-working defender during 132 VFL-AFL games (11 with Fitzroy and 121 with Geelong) was destined serve as a senior coach at AFL level and brings priceless experience to Alberton.

His greatest success came at Geelong where he was a part of the coaching group behind the Cats’ rebuild from 2004 and their 2007 and 2009 AFL Premierships. But he added a further dimension to his coaching, moulding the young playing group during the Gold Coast Suns’ first three years in the competition.

Hinkley is highly regarded throughout the AFL for his ability to build relationships with his players and develop their talent while maintaining a non-negotiable team-first ethos and effective game style.

“It’s about being consistent and developing stability around the Club,” Hinkley said.

“You’ll need a team-first attitude to play in my side and that’s what I expect from everyone. I’ll adopt a really consistent and fair approach, but I’ll also be very demanding.

“Our playing list is certainly young and it’s going to be one that will take time to develop and we’ll need a lot of fan support and a lot of people backing us in all the way through, knowing that at some stages there will be a bump or two but expect that we’ll get there.

“I can tell our supporters one thing – that I will work my butt off to make sure that this Club and our coaching staff really come together and make sure that we’re doing everything we can to ensure that we return Port Adelaide to where it should be – a very successful footy club.”

ALAN RICHARDSON - Director of Coaching and Strategy

Alan Richardson is another very important component of the renewal of the Port Adelaide coaching group undertaken ahead of the 2013 AFL season.

Like Hinkley, Richardson was a rugged defender during his 114-game career with Collingwood and has brought a hard edge and demand for accountability to his coaching roles.

In his newly-created role of director if coaching and strategy, he brings further extensive assistant coaching experience to Alberton, having spent a decade with four AFL clubs, including the biggest in the AFL.

Richardson has a unique role at Alberton, serving as Hinkley’s senior assistant and also supporting the rest of Port Adelaide’s coaching panel while overseeing their professional development.

Richardson is honoured to come to bring his expertise to Port Adelaide and to assist the club’s rebuild.

“There’s always been a real respect for the club,” Richardson said.

“Obviously historically there’s enormous respect because of the success of the club. You think of Port Adelaide and you just think of premierships.

As a coach when you knock on the door to be a part of something, to be a part of the rebuild that’s a real honour.

“It’ll take a lot of hard work and from what I’ve heard of the playing group they’re certainly going to be up to it.

“It’s certainly going to take some patience, given there’s sure to be some changes to the way that we approach our footy and the way that we’ll play.

“I suppose hard work and patience would be what we’d be looking for.”

Darren Burgess returned to the Port Adelaide Football Club in October 2012, five years after his first stint at Alberton and with an enhanced international reputation for guiding and building elite athletic performance.

After developing his skills in world football - with the Socceroos and the Liverpool Football Club in the English Premier League – Burgess comes with a wealth of experience and the latest knowledge in the world of high performance.

Burgess is thrilled to be involved again with AFL football, particularly back at Alberton where he served from 2005 to 2007.

“It’s nice to work in a competition as challenging and elite as the AFL, but it’s even better when you support and are passionate about the team you are working for,” Burgess said.

“The experiences I have had while I’ve been away have been immense in terms of what I’ve learned about what goes into preparing to perform at the highest levels and the changing ways in which athletes and teams go about that.”
