FOUR kids from the Starlight Foundation struck it lucky on Thursday when they were joined by Power players Chad Cornes, Toby Thurstans, Nick Lower and Jarred Redden for a game of ten-pin bowling.

Daniel, Ben, Bradley, Emily and a selection of their family and friends went head-to-head with the Port Adelaide quartet at AMF Woodville as part of the club’s new charity arm the ‘Power of Dreams’.

Avid Power fan, Daniel, impressed the boys when he turned up wearing entirely black, white and teal and his dad also caught their attention when he rolled down his socks to reveal a Port Adelaide tattoo (inspired by the 2004 premiership win) on his ankle.

Nick Lower, who bowled last in Daniel’s lane, started impressively with two strikes and a spare in the opening three frames, but the kids soon caught up when he started flirting with his form.

“The scores were pretty close and it came down to the last few frames. I got off to a good start, so I thought I’d pull it back, but I just couldn’t recapture it,” Lower said.

“All the kids actually bowled pretty well. Young Daniel in my group was really good and he’s a great kid as well.”

Toby bowled a score of 126 in Ben’s lane, but Chad blamed his troublesome finger for his poor form, which included more than one gutter ball.

“I saw Chad bowl a couple with his wrong hand,” Lower said.

“But I think he’s just using his finger as an excuse for getting beaten by the kids.”

The players also posed for photos and signed autographs for the group of 20-plus kids.

The ‘Power of Dreams’ is a separate, not-for-profit entity created by the Port Adelaide Football Club with the aim of providing financial and other support to existing charities and charitable projects.

Another 12 Power players used their Thursday afternoon off to visit various other charities across Adelaide.

Lower said the boys enjoyed getting out and about in the community.

“It’s been great just to meet all the kids and see the smiles on their faces,” he said.

“They’re in a situation less fortunate than our own and it’s good for us to do as much as we can to make them happy.”
