TOBY Thurstans lost his attempt to clear himself of negligent contact with an umpire at the AFL tribunal on Tuesday night.
Thurstans was charged by the Match Review Panel on Monday for negligently making contact with umpire Michael Avon, during the first quarter of the win over Fremantle on Saturday night.
Thurstans received a fine of $2,600, which is the standard for a first offence of making umpire contact. He could have accepted a fine of $1,950 but chose to contest the charge, and therefore loses his 25 per cent discount for an early guilty plea.
Thurstans told the tribunal Avon had quickly changed position and thrown the ball up when Thurstans had been expecting a bounce. He believed he had fulfilled all his responsibilities to avoid umpire contact. But the tribunal disagreed and rejected the request to have the fine reduced.
Meanwhile, teammate Nick Lower accepted the reprimand offered to him by the Match Review Panel after contact with Fremantle’s Paul Hasleby during the last quarter of the game.
Lower was charged with striking and will take the reprimand with 93.75 points added towards his future record but will be free to face the Western Bulldogs in Darwin on Saturday night.
