THE Port Adelaide Football Club mourns the passing of legendary player and administrator Dave Boyd.

Boyd, who represented Port Adelaide in 222 games from 1948 to 1960, passed away on Friday night at the age of 90 after a long battle with illness.

Boyd’s resume will ensure he is remembered as one of the greatest players in Port Adelaide’s rich 147-year history.

Boyd was a seven-time premiership player at Alberton and was an integral part of the Magpies incomparable team of the 1950s that won an Australian record six consecutive flags from 1954 to 1959.

From an individual perspective Boyd won the 1956 Magarey Medal as the best and fairest player in the SANFL and represented South Australia on 19 occasions.

Boyd was selected in Port Adelaide’s ‘Greatest Team of the Greatest Club’ and is a member of both the club’s Hall of Fame and the SANFL Hall of Fame.

Boyd was also awarded life membership of Port Adelaide and the SANFL.

Revered Port Adelaide player and coach Fos Williams once described Boyd as “classy” and “a perfect footballer with great dash from the centre”.

Upon his retirement from playing Boyd continued to serve the club as a successful administrator for the next three decades.

From 1961 to 1990 Boyd was on the Board of Directors at Port Adelaide, where he also served as Chairman of Selectors and the club’s SANFL league director.

Port Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas said the loss of Boyd would be felt by all within the Port Adelaide family.

“Dave Boyd was synonymous with the Port Adelaide Football Club. He dedicated a massive part of his life, 43 consecutive years of service in fact, to making Port Adelaide a great football club,” said Mr Thomas.

“There is no doubt we will all have a heavy heart today knowing we have lost one of the all-time greats of Port Adelaide.

“One look at his resume will leave you in no doubt of his amazing contribution to our club. “A seven-time premiership player including a member of our famous record breaking six-in-a-row era of the 1950s, a Magarey Medallist and South Australian state representative tells you how good a player Dave Boyd was.

“But that only tells half the story. Equally impressive was his thirty years of administrative service at Board level that ensured Port Adelaide’s greatness continued for decades to follow.

“On behalf of the entire Port Adelaide community I pass on my heartfelt condolences to Dave’s family Sandra, Greg and Russell and their extended families.

“As difficult a time as it is, it allows us to celebrate a truly brilliant career. Dave Boyd’s legend and legacy will live on forever at Alberton and he will be remembered as one of the greatest contributors to the Port Adelaide Football Club.”

Boyd will be farewelled on Thursday with a service at Alberton Oval at 2:00pm.
