IT was a case of second time lucky for Port Adelaide with the recruitment of Scott Lycett after the West Coast premiership ruckman’s return to Alberton was confirmed.

With Lycett a restricted free agent, the Eagles had the right to match the Power’s five-year contract offer for the big man by Tuesday afternoon but they elected not to.

“Scott is someone who is a former Port Adelaide junior and so we’ve followed his career really closely,” Port Adelaide General Manager – Football, Chris Davies said on NAB AFL Trade Radio on Tuesday morning.

“We had a crack at him a few years ago when he decided to re-sign with West Coast at the time so a lot of these things are about timing as well.”

26-year-old Lycett has played 75 AFL games and kicked 45 goals since making his debut in 2011.

He played six games for Port Adelaide in the SANFL before being drafted by West Coast with pick 29 in the 2010 AFL National Draft.

His arrival at Alberton is likely to give the Power the option to rotate him and 2017 All-Australian Paddy Ryder up forward.

“That’s a coaching question more than anything but it’s going to necessitate a need for Ken and our coaching group to rethink the way that we have played the game,” Davies said.

“Clearly having Ryder and Lycett is going to provide us with two high quality ruckmen, both guys can play forward as well so I imagine they’ll mix and match in the ruck and also playing forward.

“But no doubt it’s going to necessitate a bit of a change in the way that we play the game.”

The Power will now turn its attention to other trades with work underway to get wantaway midfielder Jared Polec to North Melbourne.

“We’ve now got Scott in, which is covering a significant area for us,” Davies said.

“When Paddy wasn’t up and about last year we tended to struggle so we think we’ve addressed that need and we’ll now look throughout the rest of the trade period to see what we can get in to improve other areas.”

Another Power player attracting attention from Victorian clubs is wingman Karl Amon.

Davies said the club would try to facilitate a move for him back to a club in his native Melbourne.

“He’s expressed an interest in wanting to return to Victoria,” Davies said.

He’s a player who has given us pretty good service. He’s a fantastic young man and where we can, we’d like to help him get back to Victoria.

“Which club that will be, I guess will play out but I think it’s fair to say that Karl has made his preference clear and we’ll help him achieve that.”
