AHEAD of the 2019 SANFL Statewide Super League Grand Final between Port Adelaide and Glenelg, portadelaidefc.com.au looks back at the most recent season-deciding encounters between the two sides.

Port Adelaide and Glenelg have enjoyed a rich rivalry in the SANFL competition over the years, with Sunday’s grand final set to be the seventh time the clubs have met in the premiership-decider.

Port holds a 5-1 advantage over the Tigers in grand finals, with victories in 1977, 1981, 1988, 1990 and 1992, with the Bays winning the first ever grand final meeting between the two sides in 1934.

In 1992, the Magpies proved they had the wood over Glenelg in premiership-deciders, defeating them for the fifth consecutive time.

The Bays - like two years earlier - started the better of the two teams, kicking three goals to one in the opening term to lead by 13 points at the first break.

Port Adelaide responded strongly in the second term, booting seven goals to one to take complete control of the contest.

With the heavens opening up, the Magpies then added another seven goals in the premiership quarter, to open up an unassailable 51-point lead at the final change.

Port added two goals to one in the final quarter, but the damage had well and truly been done as the Magpies ran out 56-point victors.

Nathan Buckley - having won the Magarey Medal a couple of weeks prior - produced a best afield performance to be awarded the Jack Oatey Medal.

Scott Hodges booted six goals, dominating in tough conditions for a key forward, while Darren Smith (three) and Buckley (two) were the other multiple goal-kickers.

Brett Chalmers produced the highlight of the afternoon, with his 75-metre bomb late in the second quarter handing the Magpies all of the momentum heading into the main break.

Bruce Abernethy was once again a key performer for the Magpies in a big game, Rohan Smith provided plenty of run and carry through the midfield.

Port’s 1992 premiership was its fifth against Glenelg, and the 31st in the club’s history.
