Willem Drew enjoyed a breakout year in 2019, cracking into Port Adelaide's AFL line up for 10 games.

PORT ADELAIDE midfielder Willem Drew has had surgery after suffering a fracture in his left foot.

The 21-year-old experienced discomfort after the Power's pre-season win over the Western Bulldogs in Whyalla.

Scans revealed the fracture in one of the metatarsal bones and Drew underwent surgery this week.

"We sought various opinions both locally and interstate on the best management for Willem's injury and ultimately we decided surgery would be the best option," said Port Adelaide Head of Medical Services Tim O'Leary.

"It's an unfortunate injury for Willem after he put in a strong block of training in pre-season.

He is recovering well after the operation and we'll establish a timeline for his return in the coming weeks."

Drew had a breakout year in 2019, making his AFL debut in Port Adelaide's Round 1 win over Melbourne and playing a total of 10 games, averaging 16 disposals and six clearances per game.

He also averaged 27 disposals, eight tackles and seven clearances in 13 SANFL games.
