A member of Port Adelaide's leadership group, Tom Jonas is a success story for rookies, having worked his way into the side from 2013 under Ken Hinkley as a permanent defender. Can play on talls and smalls and plays a tough, relentless brand of football. A no-nonsense player, he demands a lot from his peers and drives standards within the group.

TIMELINE

2011

Playing primarily at Norwood in the SANFL, Jonas developed his game significantly across half-back for the Redlegs. He was elevated to the senior list to play against Hawthorn in Round 21 – a baptism by fire in a team that suffered its biggest ever defeat and saw him play on Hawks skipper and 2008 Norm Smith Medallist Luke Hodge. His disciplined, tough and hard approach to his football saw him provide an attacking dimension to Port’s batch of young newcomers.

2012

After strong performances in the SANFL with Norwood, Jonas earned a promotion to the Power's senior list halfway through the year and finished the season in the main group. Promoted to the senior list permanently for 2013.

2013

Established himself as one of the club's most important defenders playing 21 games including two finals. Capable of playing on tall and small opponents, Jonas was similar to Jack Hombsch in providing extra versatility to the Power's defence.

2014

Gained promotion into the leadership group and took that vote of confidence on to the field, continuing to improve his game to become one of the club’s most trusted defenders. Jonas cemented his place in the side as a big-bodied defender capable of playing on a variety of opponents with 22 games including each of the club’s finals. His toughness was proven when he bounced back from a corked hip in the Semi Final to front Hawthorn in the preliminary bout in September.

2015

After battling most of the season with injury, Jonas found himself out of the team and he was forced to work his way back through the SANFL.

2016

His season was derailed by injury and suspension. A six-game ban for a hit on West Coast's Andrew Gaff put a line through Jonas for much of the year, before injury curtailed the rest of his season. Did not return after Round 9.

2017

After missing a large part of season 2016, Jonas was back in fine form with the Power in 2017. The key defender played 21 games for the year, and was influential in Port’s great defensive record.

2018

Another great season for Tom Jonas is 2018, with the key defender playing a crucial role in a relatively inexperienced defensive group. Jonas averaged 17 touches and eight marks from his 18 appearances - missing four games with a niggling knee injury.
