Port Adelaide star forward Gemma Houghton has committed to the club for a further two seasons, signing a contract extension that will see her remain at Alberton until at least the end of 2027.

A cornerstone of Port Adelaide’s AFLW program since joining ahead of its inaugural season, Houghton has built a reputation for her blistering pace, game-changing ability, and leadership both on and off the field.

The two-time All-Australian and dynamic goalkicker recently etched her name into the history books, becoming the first AFLW player to kick 100 goals after a memorable shot after the siren in Round 12 this season.

The 86-game* veteran enjoyed a career-best year in front of goal, booting 23 majors and finishing second in the league’s goalkicking tally behind teammate Indy Tahau.

She capped off her season as the league’s leading goal assist player, further cementing her status as one of the premier forwards in the competition, and earned selection in the AFLW All-Australian squad of 42.

Affectionately known as ‘Aunty’ to her teammates, Houghton’s nickname reflects both her warm, nurturing presence within the group and her proud First Nations heritage.

On signing the two-year extension, Houghton said she was excited to continue her journey with the club.

“I’ve loved every moment as a Port Adelaide player and I’m really excited about the direction we’re heading as a group,” Houghton said.

“We’ve come a long way since our inaugural season. While we didn’t make finals this year, we matured in so many ways that will make us stronger going forward, and I’m really looking forward to being part of that for two more years.

“Pulling on this guernsey is a privilege I’ll never take for granted. I’ve made so many cherished memories here, and I can’t wait to make more.

“The talent coming through the pathways is incredible, and the young players on our list are really exciting. We’re building something special, and to be part of that for the next couple of years means a lot to me.”

Port Adelaide Head of AFLW Shane Grimm said the club was thrilled to have Houghton locked in for the next two years.

“Gemma is not only an incredible player but an important leader within our program,” Grimm said.

“She’s had her best season as a Port Adelaide player, and we’re delighted she’ll remain at Alberton for two more years.

“While she’s a fierce competitor and a key part of our forward line on the field, Gemma’s warm and maternal nature make her equally important off it.

“Her ability to connect with her teammates, particularly those entering a high-performance environment for the first time, is one of the many qualities that make her such a special player and person.”
