PORT Adelaide’s AFL team heads into the NAB Cup full of energy after a comfortable win over its SANFL side at the club’s annual Family Night at Alberton Oval.

The Power cruised effortlessly to the final siren after opening a five-goal advantage at the first break.

It piled on the goals with ease through the middle two quarters before slowing to a 150-point final effort at the close of proceedings at its spiritual home ground.

For a side which has turned heads with the intense pre-season it has been subjected to by former Liverpool fitness guru Darren Burgess, the Power did not disappoint an over 4000-strong crowd of old and new supporters.

Despite a relatively scrappy game, the Power’s midfield was in full drive as it effortlessly controlled centre stoppages to feed the ball forward to its chief attackers.

Jay Schulz bagged five majors in the first half before retiring from the match as part of 'traditional' trial game rotations.

His standout performance did not overshadow similarly impressive contributions from much younger and inexperienced hands.

Mason Shaw, the newly drafted 198cm forward, bagged two classy goals after coming onto the field at half time.

Justin Westhoff managed two majors for his full-ground contribution, while Daniel Stewart was eased into proceedings after undergoing off-season surgery, but the tall entering his fourth season at Alberton was able to pick off two goals of his own, as was the case with Brett Ebert who looked lively playing as a small forward.

For sheer excitement value it was hard to go past Jake Neade, the 18-year-old recruit from Ballarat who provided two scintillating goals including the goal of the day evading several Magpies players to slot a beauty in the first term.

Angus Monfries was unselfish around the ground with a number of goal assists as well as running through the midfield for the latter parts of the game.

Campbell Heath was in good form running out of defence and kicked the opening goal of the match in an encouraging sign for a player who comes to the Power on the back of two knee reconstructions.

The Power’s regulars didn’t disappoint either with Jasper Pittard particularly impressive with a number of pressure efforts and using the ball well.

Hamish Hartlett was similarly impressive with his trademark long kicking providing plenty of opportunity to the Power’s forwards.

Ollie Wines strengthened his claim for round one selection with a quality performance playing out of the middle.

His mature ready-made body serviced the first-round draft pick well as he showed off his clever ability with the ball throughout the evening.

The Magpies didn’t discredit themselves in a game against an AFL side either.

Throughout the early stages of the game the club’s SANFL side was able to work the ball forward, but it was through the middle stanza that the difference between the elite national competition and local league was most evident.

Playing a young side with a number of players promoted from its under 18 centre of excellence program, the Magpies battled all day to heap pressure on their Power comrades and were unlucky to only manage three majors for the game.

Power senior coach Ken Hinkley was pleased with his side’s performance and the opportunity to play against an unpredictable opponent in the Magpies.

“It was a good opportunity for both sides to have a run around any play some good football against some different opposition,” said Hinkley.

“I think there was a number of players who did their little bits and pieces … some of our younger boys played pretty well but overall I thought it was a pretty even game by most boys.

“I’m sure our supporters would have been excited about seeing them play for the first time.

“I’ve been really pleased by our progress all through the summer.

“Again tonight the boys showed that our effort was there and they were really focused in on what they had to do and that was really pleasing.”

The result provides the Power with a good preparation prior to Sunday’s opening NAB Cup round against the Crows and Saints at AAMI Stadium on Sunday 17th.
