Ben Newton, Brendon Ah Chee and Cameron Hitchcock have agreed to new one-year deals and will remain on the Power’s senior list next year.

Hitchcock is the only member of that trio to have played an AFL game.

Senior coach Ken Hinkley has forecast a big season for Hitchcock as he looks to recover from injury battles fought over the last two seasons.

“Cam is probably at the stage in his career where he needs to put some runs on the board and he’ll be working very hard to achieve those,” Hinkley told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“We’re really confident he adds to our side but we just haven’t been able to get him fit enough for long enough – that’s something we want to change next year.”

Despite not playing an AFL game, Newton proved one of Port Adelaide’s most consistent SANFL players in 2013, particularly at the end of the year.

Hinkley is enthusiastic about the 21-year-old continuing his development towards a potential AFL debut.

“Newts had a really good year for the Magpies in the SANFL,” said Hinkley.

“His season progressed really well and we’re excited about what he might be able to offer us.

“We think he deserves the opportunity to continue showing that improvement with his penetrating kick and brave attack on the game.”

Ah Chee continued his steady development as an inside midfielder playing at both SANFL League and Reserves levels, but like Hitchcock needs to get a clean run without injury problems.

“Brendon had a lot of injury issues this year, but we’ve got a lot of faith in him and see him as part of our future,” said Hinkley.

“We’re really keen to keep him going, but he needs a bit of luck with his body.”

The club also affirmed running midfielder Kane Mitchell will continue on the rookie list.

Mitchell played 13 games in 2013 after being upgraded to the club’s senior list following long term injuries to teammates.

He will see out the second of his two-year rookie deal next year, with the club choosing to maintain the right mix of positional players on its primary list.

“Mitch had a really good season and he’d be pretty happy with it. He played a lot of AFL football and he would know the rookie list doesn’t exclude him from doing the same next year,” said Hinkley.

“It’s about list management and the positions we need to keep. We discussed the possibilities and probabilities of movements and Kane was certainly one of those players discussed.

“While we’re keeping him as a rookie, we also see him as having a strong future at our club.”

Port Adelaide also confirmed the delisting of 2008 premiership ruckman Brent Renouf.

But the club has made the decision with a view to re-drafting him during the rookie draft on November 27.

Renouf played five games for the year but battled knee problems throughout the rest of the season.

Hinkley emphasised Renouf’s anticipated rookie-listing was about giving him a pressure-free platform to rehabilitate from patella surgery undertaken in September.

“He’s had significant challenges with his body since coming here,” explained Hinkley.

“We thought the best thing for him was to make sure he gets his body right in the knowledge the club is committed to him.

“We want to give him the best opportunity to get back to playing good AFL football as a ruckman, we don’t think he’ll be ready for the start of the year, but we want to see him work back towards getting full fitness and towards being the best ruckman at our football club.”

The Power’s second list lodgement comes a week from the 2013 NAB AFL Draft with the club maintaining selections 21 (the first pick of the second round), 45, 52 and 70.

The NAB AFL Draft will be held on November 21, with the pre-season and rookie drafts on Wednesday 27 November.
