A new feature on portadelaidefc.com.au in 2014 is Craig McKay’s player reviews.

McKay, who posts on football forum BigFooty as Macca19, has been writing his reviews for years on the forum, but this year, we’ll be replicating his Top 5 on the club site.

The opinions below are those of Macca19, not necessarily the club.

Macca19's Top 5

Ollie Wines
BOG for me. Stunning performance by a stunning young player. 4 quarter effort. So strong over the ball. So important with the ball. Goes 100% all the time. There won’t be any 2nd year blues here. Ollie will be recognised as elite by the end of the year. Big call? Maybe. Fair call? I think it is. 19 contested possessions, 2 goals, 11 clearances. What a performance. So happy we've got him and so happy he'll be here another 3 seasons. Destined for greatness.

Jared Polec
Oh my goodness me! How glad are we that we landed Jared Polec. Just about best on ground in his first outing for the club, after such an invisible prior 18 months at AFL level. Stunning is one word. Match winner are others. He plays sexy football. That goal in the last quarter where he burst the pack open and slotted it through at full pace was as beautiful a thing ive seen on a football field since Judd was at the Eagles. Not only that, once again he got his own ball. 12 contested possessions, 5 clearances. Excellent game Jared. Welcome to Port Adelaide.

Robbie Gray
Such an underrated player across the AFL, I hope people saw his game this evening. What they would have seen is a match winning performance both up forward and also through the midfield. His work in digging out those clearances and getting the 2nd or 3rd disposal from a stoppage was excellent. His ability to dodge and weave up forward and provide a genuine option was even better. 4 goals was a fantastic reward for an outstanding, match winning game. His best game since his knee. So much to look forward to!

Jack Hombsch
Waite got away from him for a 10 minute period but that was it. That was a superb defensive game by Hombsch. Waite has been a trouble player in the past and he was able to keep him completely out of the game at crucial times. So many times you could sense Waite about to do something, but then it never happened as Hombsch was there with the spoil. Thought he was excellent with the ball as well. Brilliant game and certainly a player of the future.

Justin Westhoff
A game of two halves unfortunately after such a heavy knock to the head whilst he was tearing the game apart int he second quarter. That quarter deserves to go down in Port Adelaide folklore. 10 disposals, 6 marks, 4 goals and a goal assist in an amazing 20 minutes of football. He didnt get a touch in the third quarter and came back into it at a key time in the last quarter. In for a huge year. Didn’t like just how quick he was thrown back though.

Best of the young guns

Jarman Impey
Following on from last week, words can’t express how impressive he is for a debutant. Defensively he did as good a job as we could ever have hoped for on Garlett. Garlett had a purple patch of about 5 minutes and that was it for the whole game. A player that has been the match winner against us numerous times and Impey blanketed him well. There were things he could improve on. That lazy kick that led to a goal wasn’t pretty but he didnt put a foot wrong after that. He raised his game and shut Garlett out of it for the rest of the game. Knows how to put himself in danger as well. Backed into a number of oncoming packs. Great work Wiz!

Tom Clurey
Went onto a few different opponents including Ellard to start with, then Henderson, then Garlett at times when Impey was off the field. Thought he performed as well as could be expected for a debut game with plenty of pressure ball coming in for much of the game. Dont think he made a mistake with the ball, his positioning was first class as well. Just knows how to defend, how to make up ground and how to spoil properly. His blocking and providing a 3rd man up is great. Didn’t find anywhere near as much uncontested ball as he has done in the pre season, but didn’t need to.
