A FIVE-GOAL effort and Mark of the Year contender from Chad Wingard in his 50th game helped Port Adelaide snap a six-game losing streak against Fremantle at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The ending of that streak - dating back to 2009 - doubled as the club's seventh win for the year and best start to a season in the AFL.

It happened in spectacular fashion as the Power overcame the loss of primary ruckman Matthew Lobbe before the game - and the Dockers' regulation strangle-play - to take out a 18-point victory.

The Power took the reins early thanks to 150-gamer Jay Schulz booting his only goal of the game, before Kane Mitchell dutifully extended the Power's lead from 45 metres out on a tight angle.

But Fremantle came to the party after quarter time though and dominated the Power in all areas.

While the Power was able to get the ball inside 50 in the second term, it couldn't use it effectively.

Fremantle, on the other hand, peppered the goals and converted 33 points to wrest the lead back from the Power which never looked in control of the play.

Port Adelaide slowly chipped away at the Dockers' defensive machine after half time, with the crafty Chad Wingard featuring strongly at one end with two goals for the term, while Zac Clarke did the same at the other for Fremantle.

The Power swarmed around the ball late in the quarter and started to break into patches of its trademark spreading game - pivotal in setting up Wingard's pair and Mitchell's second goal for the game.

Trailing by five points at the last change, the Power handed Brent Renouf the red vest and injected versatile runner Aaron Young into the game.

And Port's midfield charged forward, with Wingard given two early opportunities to take the lead, before Matt White instead seized the initiative to slot two goals and take the advantage back with flair.

Jasper Pittard, Wingard (his fifth) and Young then chalked up the next three in a ten-minute patch of dominant play.

It was enough to open a 31-point lead by time-on and cruise to the finish despite a late flurry from the visitors.

More to come...
