PORT Adelaide SANFL captain Steve Summerton is looking forward to the opportunity of leading his side on to the biggest stage in state league football next week, as the Magpies vie for its first premiership since 1999.

Just as former Port Adelaide captain David Brown did when the Magpies took home its last piece of silverware 15 years ago, Summerton and his soldiers will go into battle against arch rival Norwood on Sunday.

The 26-year-old, who won the Bob Shearman Medal for the best player in the competition for 2014 as voted by the SANFL's coaches, says the Magpies cannot wait to have another crack at the Redlegs, following its 13-point loss in week two of the finals series.

"This is why you play footy - to play in a grand final - and to captain the club to a grand final is just a massive honour," Summerton told portadelaidefc.com.au.

"The boys and myself can't wait to get stuck into Norwood next week.

"We'll go out there and give it our best crack and it's really important that we play four quarters of really tough, intense finals footy."

Summerton, whose heart bleeds black-and-white after coming into the League side through the club's junior ranks, led from the front in last week's preliminary final win over South Adelaide.

After having a quiet first half with fewer than 10 disposals, the captain finished with 20 possessions, six clearances, two inside 50s, three defensive rebounds and also managed to get on the end of two goals - both booted through at crucial points of the match.

And despite the team's first-half slump last weekend, Summerton is confident the Magpies will produce a four-quarter performance against Norwood that can bring home the Thomas Seymour Hill Trophy.

"In the first half we were getting our hands on the footy, but it was just our composure that was letting us down," Summerton said.

"I think that we were panicking a bit because its finals footy and obviously the intensity is right up there.

"In the second half we started to get our composure back, hit a few targets and we started to put the scoreboard pressure on.

"We have proven throughout the year that when we play our best footy we can beat anyone.

"We are quietly confident but we also know that challenge we are facing and we are really pumped."

Port Adelaide plays Norwood in the SANFL IGA League Grand Final at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday 21 September at 2:40pm.
