The AFL has confirmed Port Adelaide will host Hawthorn on ANZAC Day in 2015.

The Power will join with 10 other clubs in commemorating the centenary of Australia and New Zealand’s service in armed conflict as part of an epic ANZAC Day fixture when it plays the Hawks at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday 25 April at 7:10pm (ACST).

Next year’s unprecedented five-game for ANZAC Day fixture includes the traditional afternoon match between Collingwood and Essendon at the MCG, and the recently confirmed morning game between St Kilda and Carlton in New Zealand.

The remaining two games will be confirmed as part of the AFL’s full fixture release on Thursday.

It is the second time Port Adelaide will host an ANZAC Day game, after doing so against the Western Bulldogs at AAMI Stadium in 2004.

Port Adelaide’s association with ANZAC stretches back to the First World War, when many of its players and officials enlisted for service in the Australian Imperial Force.

Those Port Adelaide men would serve at Gallipoli, in the Middle East and on the Western Front.

The club’s players also fought and died in subsequent conflicts, including World War II and the Vietnam War.

Port Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas says the club will use its ANZAC Day game to again acknowledge the significant contribution of the nation’s service men and women.

“We are thrilled the AFL has provided us the opportunity to host such a significant game on such a significant day,” says Mr Thomas.

“Port Adelaide has a long association with the ANZAC and we are humbled by the opportunity to be part of the AFL’s commemorations of the centenary of the ANZAC story.

“We’ll be working with our partner, the RSL of SA, to ensure a respectful game day presentation for this significant milestone, and our whole club is looking forward to being part of a special ANZAC Day for entire AFL community.

“We think it’s an excellent opportunity to showcase our proud association with the RSL and play in front of what should be another huge turnout against the reigning premiers.”

Port Adelaide’s full 2015 fixture will be released on Thursday, with portadelaidefc.com.au to provide full coverage of the Power’s next draw.
