On the loss:
“It was embarrassing and not up to the level we expect of ourselves. But do you know what, it’s been a bit consistent, it’s something we haven’t been able to get right and play hard and strong enough for long enough when it goes against us. It happened to us a couple of weeks ago and it happened again today.”

“Is it our worst performance? I don’t know that I want to separate both. I think both (the Showdown and today) were equally as bad.

On exactly what went wrong:
“As soon as it went against us, we weren’t prepared to work as hard as we needed to and to hang on. We just weren’t up to it and GWS were just too good at clearing the ball from stoppage, working it through traffic, getting it out into space and having a preparedness to run and we didn’t show any of those things.”

“A lack of consistency in our ability to compete is a concern. We know we can compete when we get it right, but right now you’ve got every right to ask the question because it’s not there.”

On what we do next:
“Right now we take a step back and look deeply at the way we prepared for the game – could we do anything better. We’ve just got to demand some better and stronger performances from key people.”

“As leaders of the club, we need to own that responsibility for our performance. I’m not throwing the players in there on their own, it’s the coaches as well. We have to own that responsibility and say ‘that’s just not good enough’ and we lead the footy club so we’ve got to make sure we’re doing everything we can to turn that around. I’ve always said the most important ingredient in leadership is gameday. You need to be able to perform at a level that leads the rest of the players and we haven’t been able to do that.”

“We need to be mentally stronger that’s the key ingredient for it. We watched the good teams compete over the weekend and it’s just a will to compete and keep going.”

“We’ve been working on it (mental toughness) for some time, but obviously on today’s results and the one a couple of weeks ago, you’d say it’s still got a long way to go. I can’t disagree with you – I have to acknowledge that we have to keep working in that space and be more demanding, more driven to get where we need to go – and at the moment we’re not delivering.”

On whether it changes his goals in 2016:
“No, it’s Round 4, we’re two and two. It looks like we’re a long way off two and two but that’s exactly where we are. We see sides every week go from being good to being no good. Next week we go back to Adelaide and play a really good side in Geelong and we need to be ready for the battle and if we’re not we’ll find ourselves in a really difficult position again.”
