Voss not thinking of 2018 when 2017 season on the line

Lee Gaskin // AFL Media  July 17, 2017 4:00 PM

Michael Voss Press Conference - 17 July 2017 - PTV Voss speaks to the media.

STEPPING back into a senior coaching role is the furthest thing from Michael Voss's mind as he puts all his energies into helping Port Adelaide's tilt at the premiership.

Voss, the midfield manager at the Power, has been floated as a potential candidate for a second tilt at a senior coaching position.

Voss coached the Brisbane Lions from 2009-13, winning 43 of his 109 games in charge before joining the Power in an assistant coaching role in 2015.

He is highly regarded at Port and has been crucial in the development of vice-captain Ollie Wines and NAB Rising Star contender Sam Powell-Pepper.

"I get asked that question a lot and I get why people ask me that question, but I just find it just completely irrelevant," Voss said on Monday.

"It is the furthest thing from my mind.

"We've got a really good opportunity in front of us as a football team.

"We've got a dogfight that with six weeks to go, we've got a really important challenge this week against Melbourne and to shift your focus off anything other than that, would be a distraction.

"I find it really irrelevant at this time of the year."

A couple of coaching positions could be available with Collingwood's Nathan Buckley and Rodney Eade at Gold Coast under pressure to be retained in 2018.

Voss has backtracked from comments he made on Fox Footy last month when he said he wanted another crack at being a senior coach.

"I'm never one to shy away from a big task," Voss said.

"I still think that (desire) obviously burns deep for me, and whether another opportunity exists there or not, that'll play out.

"The best thing that I could possibly do right now is just to continue to work on my own craft, but purely with the interests of making our group better."
