STEVEN MOTLOP has revealed a desire for team success and a strong family connection with Port Adelaide Football Club were the major reasons for the Geelong speedster choosing Port in 2018 and beyond.

Motlop nominated the Power as his destination of choice on Friday afternoon, and the move was made official when Geelong decided not to match Port’s offer to lure the illusive forward to Alberton.

“One of the reasons why I’m playing footy is because I want to win a premiership,” Motlop told NAB AFL Trade Radio.

“They [Port] are getting some good players in, like Tom Rockliff, and they’ve got a great bunch already.

“I think we are going to be able to contend next year, so my decision was based around that.”

Motlop kicked 175 goals from his 135 appearances with the Cats since making his AFL debut in 2010, but the 26-year-old said the temptation of being close to family was strong.

“Family is the most important thing to me, and if I’m happy off the field hopefully it’s going to make me play good footy,” he said.

“My brother Daniel lives in Adelaide and we have a business over there. My cousin Marlon works at Port Adelaide as well.

“It’s not that I wasn’t happy at Geelong – I was very happy – but obviously I’m going to love being around my family.”

Motlop joins fellow restricted free agent Tom Rockliff at Alberton, with Geelong receiving pick no. 19 in this year’s NAB AFL Draft as compensation.
