PORT ADELAIDE has selected Sam Hayes with its first pick in the 2017 National Draft.

Hayes was touted as one of the best ruckmen in the draft pool, and a player who could be damaging inside forward 50.

The 18-year-old was an important member of Vic Metro's successful U18s, where he averaged 14.5 disposals and nearly 17 hit-outs a game.

The 202cm ruckman was also extremely influential for Eastern Ranges in the TAC Cup, averaging 16 disposals and 24 hit-outs a game.

Hayes was selected in the U18 All-Australian team for the past two years, with his ruck work, overhead marking and his forward craft being major reasons.
