MIDFIELDERS in the AFL are often compared to marathon runners, but Jack Trengove doesn’t necessarily buy into that assessment.

He would know – his sister Jess is a decorated marathon runner, representing Australia in the London and Rio de Janeiro Olympic marathons.

Jack has been long renowned as a strong long-distance runner in footballing circles, but he says watching his sister Jess train and compete in marathons is something quite extraordinary.

“There is a lot of self-motivation required from her because 50 per cent of her training is by herself,” Jack told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“She is so reliant on her own body, whereas we can really rely on our teammates to get us through tough periods.

“We both train as hard as we possibly can but if you are looking at pure kilometres – Jess absolutely smashes me.”

Jess believes that while they may train very differently, the overall workload and impact of training is similar.

“Jack does it all in one big session, whereas I will have a session in the morning and then one in the afternoon,” she said.

“The difference being, in marathon prep you don’t really have a rest day.

“It’s consistent, back to back (training), whereas you will train in heavy chunks.”

Despite the very heavy playing and training workloads, Jack and Jess find the odd occasion to have a run or a training session together.

During Jack’s meeting process with Ken Hinkley, the siblings found some time to have a run and a catch-up.

“It was exciting to have Jack back home, and we got the chance to have a run together which we don’t often get,” Jess said.

Jack was equally as thrilled at the opportunity of running alongside his sister – even if he knocked off slightly before Jess.

“At the 30-minute mark I was happy to pull up stumps and head back home, whereas Jess kept going for another half-an-hour,” Jack said.

“I’ve got goals to run a marathon one day… maybe I will have to take her on in a few sessions to be able to run a marathon.”
