HE has won four gold medals and a silver in the pool at the Commonwealth Games, and now Kyle Chalmers has credited his involvement in football and the Port Adelaide Football Club with the success he’s had.

Chalmers finished his hectic swimming schedule on the Gold Coast on Tuesday night with Gold in the 4x100 medley relay.

The 19-year-old teamed up with Mitch Larkin, Grant Irvine and Jake Packard to narrowly edge out England in a frantic finish.

Chalmers swam the anchor freestyle leg, and pipped England’s Benjamin Proud by a fingernail on the wall, to help his team to gold in a Commonwealth Games record of 3:31:04.

Chalmers is the son of four-time Port Adelaide SANFL premiership player Brett Chalmers, who played 120 games for the Magpies and 25 for the Power.

After his swimming success on the Gold Coast, the Port Adelaide ambassador and mad Power supporter told reporters he kicked a Sherrin around pre-race to calm his nerves, and he credited growing up in a football environment for his success.

“Footy is my massive passion and being in a team environment like a relay last night… that just helps me because of my background of playing footy as a kid and I’ve grown up in that team environment,” he said.

After winning gold in the 200 metres freestyle final on Friday, Chalmers threw out a “Go Port Adelaide” at the end of his poolside interview.

He followed up with another interview on Saturday night after being the third-fastest qualifier for the 100 metres freestyle final, where he admitted being unwell and needing rest, but putting off an afternoon nap to watch the start of his beloved Power’s match against Brisbane.

While he said he missed the nail-biting finish, Chalmers was thrilled to wake and see his side had won.

What an absolute champion!
