PORT ADELAIDE has started the 2018 SANFL season with two impressive wins - a 95-point victory over the Crows and a thrilling come-from-behind win against Glenelg.

Trailing by 13 points at half time in last Friday’s Round 2 clash with the Tigers, it took a gutsy second half performance from the Magpies to snatch the lead late in the game.

Magpies coach Matthew Lokan was impressed with his side’s ability to respond after a sluggish start against Glenelg, but knows a consistent four-quarter performance against the unbeaten Eagles is a must.

“After a slow start, it was great to get that combined team effort to overrun the Tigers, and the team growth is a reflection of our start to the season,” Lokan told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“The Eagles are a quality side – they gave us a touch up in the pre-season trial.

“They have been one of the premier sides in the SANFL for a number of seasons, so we know they will come at us hard on Saturday, and we are looking forward to that challenge.”

Woodville West Torrens have also started their 2018 campaign with two wins, having beaten West Adelaide and Central District in the opening two rounds.

James Boyd has been a ball magnet for the Eagles, racking up 39 disposals in the season-opener then backing up with 30 touches against the Dogs last weekend.

Jack Hayes booted four goals against Centrals, while Jake Johansen was also impressive slotting three of his own in the Eagles’ 27-point win in round 2.

Lokan said that the Magpies can expect to have a good core group of players that will play each week, despite some movement in the squad with AFL selection.

“Consistently we will have a core group, but we will have to balance the AFL changes week in and week out,” he said.

“It will be great to have Jasper (Pittard) back this week – that will be a bonus for us.

“Toumpas is back in the side after a week off with a shoulder, and Lindsay (Thomas) coming back in brings great experience.

“The kids have been fantastic. They’ve been really even with their contribution, and they add a different dynamic to our side.”

The Magpies clash with the Eagles on Saturday at 2.10pm at Alberton Oval, with the Reserves starting at 11.30am.
