IF you are heading along to Saturday night’s ANZAC Round blockbuster between Port Adelaide and Geelong at Adelaide Oval, keep an eye out for RSL and Australian Defence Force personnel collecting donations outside the stadium.

The RSL’s ANZAC APPEAL is about helping to tailor specialist services to the needs of current and former service men and women and their families.

Some of those examples include crisis accommodation for at risk veterans, health and wellbeing programs, financial assistance for families in need and assisting with accessing pension entitlements.

Port Adelaide has hosted an ANZAC Round clash for 15 years and will again proudly support the ANZAC APPEAL.

RSL SA Branch CEO Kim Henshaw was grateful for the assistance in promoting the cause.

“The RSL does its work through two funding means – one is charitable donations and the other is support from Government and other funding from private enterprise,” he said.

“The support of the Port Adelaide Football Club is absolutely vital to help us continue our charity work – and we need more folks like Port Adelaide, who have done such a good job for us in supporting and promoting the RSL cause.

“Obviously there is a pretty strong link between Port Adelaide and the defence community and the RSL and Port Adelaide, so it’s a natural fit and we’re very thankful.”

Mr Henshaw said the Port Adelaide Football Club had a proud history of staff and players serving in war.

He said the Port Adelaide region and the docks themselves were a pretty tough environment which had similarities to the environments encountered by the military.

“Port Adelaide has always epitomised the kind of struggle street thing that is quite often identified with military service, it’s always been a tough thing to do,” Mr Henshaw said.

“These days the Port Adelaide Football Club is one of the pre-eminent sporting organisations in this nation and that fits well for me with the fact that the Australian Military is considered to be one of the preeminent forces in the world.”

ADF personnel and RSL collectors will be on the concourses outside the ground rattling the tin and selling badges and other memorabilia on Saturday night so please give kindly.
