IT’S been 13 years since a Wanganeen featured in a Showdown and the Burgoyne name hasn’t featured in that rivalry since 2009, but on Saturday morning at Alberton the Power will go back to the future when two of the most exciting father-son prospects in Port Adelaide’s academy program feature in the inaugural Next Generation Academy Showdown.

To be played at Alberton Oval, the U15 Next Generation Academy Showdown will see a section of the best SANFL-aligned players representing the Power and Crows Next Generation Acadamies in a joint initiative between the SANFL, Port Adelaide Football Club and Adelaide Football Club.

The best Under-15s Norwood, South Adelaide, West Adelaide and the Eagles will line-up for the Power while the Crows will be represented by players from Sturt, Glenelg, North Adelaide and Central District.

These are the same divisions used for the recent SANFL U15 and U17 State Championships held in the July School Holidays.

The one exception is Sturt’s Tex Wanganeen, the son of Brownlow Medallist and inaugural Power captain Gavin Wanganeen, who will feature for Port because he is part of the club’s Father-Son Academy.

Jase Burgoyne, son of Power Premiership star Peter Burgoyne, will also represent Port Adelaide.

Adelaide’s team will be coached by the Crows’ Next Generation Academy Coordinator Jarrod Meers with assistance from injured Crows midfielder Brad Crouch while the Power side will be coached by West Adelaide U16 coach Naomi Maidment and Travis Natt, with assistance by Port’s Next Generation Academy Manager Shane Grimm.

“It’s great to reward the players who are performing well at SANFL under 15 level with a program we run,” Grimm told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“We assist the SANFL clubs with their talent programs and we give the players an elite experience in our program where we discuss nutrition and mindfulness and we give them gym and craft sessions that go beyond what they get at their SANFL clubs.

“Saturday’s game will be a good opportunity for them to play against the best players from the two club zones.

Grimm said he was particularly eager to see Wanganeen and Burgoyne don a modified black, white and teal guernsey.

“Tex and Jase are both very talented players, both their dads are Premiership players at Port Adelaide and we are excited to give them the opportunity to play for Port Adelaide as well.

“While they play at Sturt and the Eagles, when people mention the names Wanganeen and Burgoyne, they think of Port Adelaide.”

Talks are already underway to consider whether future Next Generation Academy Showdowns can be played as a curtain-raisers to AFL Showdowns at Adelaide Oval.

Entry to Alberton Oval is free with canteen facilities available.

The game starts at 10am
