PORT Adelaide was outworked and outplayed in its SANFL clash with Glenelg on Saturday, coach Chad Cornes says.

Cornes said the Magpies lacked hunger as they suffered their sixth loss of the season.

Port was in the hunt for most of the match except for during the last 13 minutes of the final term when it conceded five goals, which put the game beyond reach.

With a 3-6 win/loss record, the Magpies sit seventh and its finals dreams hang by a thread.

"I just thought it was a really flat performance," Cornes said.

"In the first quarter, we played with no real energy or excitement.

"I just thought their mids outworked us, out-scrapped us around the stoppage and our defenders were ordinary.”

The match started as poorly as it ended for Port with its horrendous injury run this season continuing - Alipate Carlile limped from the field with a knee injury and Robbie Young injured his collarbone.

Jimmy Toumpas hurt his ankle in the first quarter, but returned to play out the second half.

Despite being reduced to two rotations for much of the game, Port controlled the game in the second quarter to score seven goals to one.

Cornes was frustrated Port capitulated when challenged midway through the final term.

However, he took positives from the performances of Tom Gray and Brendon Ah Chee.

"In that second quarter we moved the ball well, gave first option and played team footy," Cornes said.

"We showed that when we do that, we are able to get ourselves back in the game

"I thought Ah Chee was good, he played with a bit of life, a bit of energy and he kicked a couple of goals.

"Tommy Gray, although he didn't have big numbers, he was one from the start that played with good energy."

Port will be back at Alberton Oval on Sunday June 12 when it plays Sturt at 2.10pm
