PORT Adelaide has been granted permission by the AFL to play its Never Tear Us Apart pre-game theme song when it hosts a final.

As the AFL takes control of the finals game-day experience, the Power were concerned that they may not have been able to play the INXS anthem which they have used during the home-and-away season to pump up the home crowd 60 seconds before the bounce.

But the League has softened its view and agreed the Power can run with the countdown song.

However, if there is a Port Adelaide-Adelaide Crows final, the AFL is unlikely to grant the Power its wish, given the split in South Australian loyalties.

Power president David Koch said it made sense for the club to continue an important part of its fan-engagement philosophy.

"We have worked so hard. We said we wanted to bring the fun back into footy and give families a great day out. Don't underestimate the power of rituals in terms of building a bridge to spectators to make them feel part of our family," Mr Koch told the Herald Sun.

"If it is our home final [against Adelaide] I am sure the Crows supporters would agree, what is the benefit of finishing higher on the ladder [if you can’t play the song]?"

Port Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas last night said the imminent decision by the AFL was a huge vote of support in the club's game day experience, which has been widely cited as the best in the League.

“Our game day experience is now widely recognised as the best in Australian sport, and Never Tear Us Apart is just one, albeit one incredibly popular, aspect of that," Mr Thomas told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“Never Tear Us Apart has resonated so strongly with our people because it reflects the history and culture of our club."
