19-year-old defender Sam Colquhoun will miss the rest of the 2014 season after undergoing surgery to repair an anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

Colquhoun suffered the injury in the closing minutes of Port Adelaide’s 58-point win over West Adelaide in the SANFL on Saturday afternoon.

He was stretchered from the ground with scans on Monday confirming the injury.

High performance manager Darren Burgess told portadelaidefc.com.au the traditional reconstruction would see Colquhoun miss the season and potentially be available for a return in May 2015.

“As we know these are season-ending injuries and its really disappointing news for Sammy,” Burgess said.

“It’s hard to define a timeframe for a return, but often if things run smoothly through the rehab it takes about a year for them to return to footy.

“We’ll keep a close eye on him through that process so that we can get him back on the park in great shape, in line with our no risk approach to injuries.”
