PORT Adelaide has overtaken its 2012 membership figure as it drives towards 40,000 members for the first time.

The club's 2012 membership figure of 37,627 members was overtaken at the club on Thursday morning when Phil and daughter Ella came into the club and joined as 2013 members.

It leaves Port Adelaide just 2372 short of the 40,000-member target it is looking to achieve this season.

Both Phil and Ella were lapsed club members but were inspired to come on board again after they attended the Power's thrilling Balfours Showdown victory last Sunday night.

"They're playing more attractive footy now," Phil said.

"When we went the other day it was just fantastic to watch how they're playing - the team spirit and team work and the game plan."

Ella came to the club decked out in her new Power gear and says she enjoyed seeing favourite player Justin Westhoff play well against the Crows too.

"It was good - they played a lot better than they did last year," Ella said.

Like many supporters out there, Phil hails from a family that has barracked for Port Adelaide through thick and thin.

Phil said the spirit of the team today reminds him a lot of the Port Adelaide of old and he hopes more lapsed members like him get back on board and join the club.

"My dad always used to bring me to the footy as a lad and I would always sit out on the wing and cheer them on," he said.

"I remember guys like Bruce Light, Tim Evans, Bomber Clifford, John Cahill, Bucky Cunningham.

"It's good now because it seems like their old spirit is back around.

"Bringing members back is really important - when people can see the club's going in the right direction, people want to be part of it.

"The club is making good decisions and having people like Kochie, Ken Hinkley and Darren Burgess on board is really good."

In another upside for Phil, his membership with the club puts him into the running to win a new Renault Megane if the club cracks 40,000 members before Round 14 and he attends that round's home match against Collingwood at AAMI Stadium.

But for both Phil and Ella, the most important thing about getting on board with Port Adelaide this year is that they're supporting the team ... and watching them succeed!

When asked whether she's looking forward to seeing the Power chalk up more wins in 2013, Ella put it simply:

"Yep!"
