A SEASON of strong leadership, selflessness, professionalism, courage and loyalty has seen Travis Boak awarded the Fos Williams Medal.

Those are the criteria by which Port Adelaide’s playing group votes for the recipient of the award named after the club’s late patriarch Foster Neil Williams, a nine-time premiership coach of the club in the SANFL and the man who established the club’s famous mantra ‘We Exist to Win Premierships’.

In his first year as the club’s captain, the 25-year-old Boak led from the front.

He averaged 25 disposals, four marks and four tackles per game and was a standout in a number of the Power’s tight finishes throughout the season.

Having taken over the captaincy at one of the more challenging periods of Port Adelaide – a new coach, chairman, board and the loss of a teammate – Boak took to the role like a duck to water.

Boak praised his teammates and the club during his acceptance speech.

"I absolutely loved the captaincy role this year, it's been an honour and something that I'd never thought I'd been able to do," said Boak.

"You learn of the rich history of the club and of the greats who have captained it before you when you first arrive.

"You don't set out to receive individual awards, but to be recognised by your teammates, guys you work with every day, is really touching.

"This group is something pretty special and something great to be a part of.

"I decided to stay with my family here and this group is on the verge of something pretty special, we've taken pretty big steps forward this year, and there is so much more we're going to achieve."
