With games against St Kilda at 5.15pm and the Crows at 6.20pm, the opening round of the NAB Cup follows a similar format to that used in last year’s pre-season competition.

The short, fast-paced nature of the games will provide Port Adelaide supporters with the first glimpse at the Power under Ken Hinkley up against AFL opposition.

Director of coaching and Strategy Alan Richardson says Port Adelaide can’t wait to show its supporters the results of a grueling pre-season under former Socceroos and Liverpool FC fitness guru Darren Burgess.

“The boys have worked really hard on their physicality and team defence [in the pre-season],” Richardson told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“This Sunday is an opportunity for our fans to get out and see the way that we’ve improved particularly in these two areas.

He also says the squad named will provide the club a chance to introduce its young recruits to the unrivalled test of playing elite opponents.

“We see the NAB Cup as a terrific opportunity to give our new guys a crack at the high intensity that AFL footy provides, but that’s not to suggest that some of those blokes won’t play in the season proper as well,” said Richardson.

“The only players that we’ve put a line through are those who physically can’t play.

“With that in mind we’re playing to win every game and use this significant opportunities to practice the game plan and put into action the conditioning program we’ve run this pre-season.”
