PORT ADELAIDE assistant coach Nathan Bassett says his side wants winning to become a habit as it looks to collect a fourth win in a row.

The Power has beaten the premiers of the last two seasons, Richmond and the Western Bulldogs, as well as the impressive Melbourne in the last three weeks to make it five wins from its last six games.

It faces bottom-of-the-ladder Carlton at the MCG on Saturday and Bassett says that won’t change the way his side attacks the contest.

“You keep playing the same way no matter who you play against,” he said at a press conference at Adelaide Airport, as the Power headed to Melbourne.

“We want to keep winning.

“It’s good that we’ve won three in a row. But we haven’t won too more than that too often in recent history so we want to keep playing well and keep winning.

“We want to normalise winning and this week gives us another opportunity to win another game of footy.”

The Power will enter the game without key defender Tom Jonas and rebounding back Darcy Byrne-Jones.

Jonas has been left out because of a hamstring complaint while Byrne-Jones will end a 56-game consecutive run since his debut after being left out for being late to training.

Jack Hombsch will replace Jonas while former Melbourne captain Jack Trengove will play his first game for the Power.

“To lose a couple this week in Darcy and Tom, probably the two most consistent performers we’ve had, we’ve got to deal with that,” Bassett said.

“But, we’ve got a couple of guys who come in who are very trustworthy players in Hombsch and Trengove and we know those two guys will do their best to play their role for the team.

It will be Carlton defender Kade Simpson’s 300th game and Bassett is expecting the Blues to lift for the occasion.

But he says Trengove’s debut will give the Power a spark.

“He’s got a thirst for knowledge, he’s got a desire to compete and he’s a terrific person,” Bassett said.

“Everyone barracking for him, they want to see him do well and this week we get an opportunity to cheer for him.

“It is a good story, it’s someone that started his career with high expectations… but then has had some significant injurie issues that has worn away at him for a couple of years.

“But for him to stick at it… and to finally get his opportunity is great for him.

Bassett identified Carlton’s history of playing high-possession football, saying the Power would try to limit the Blues’ ability to starve it of the ball.

And after being outplayed in the contest last week against the Demons he says the midfield battle will be key.

“We want that consistency in the contest, we want to be tough inside and we want to keep the ball in our front half and score as many goals as we can,” Bassett said.

“We’re a pretty good stoppage side but we got beaten a bit last week so it’s a good challenge for our mids to respond to last week.

“They’ve been pretty good for four or five weeks before that but we’ve got to get the ball going our way.”

Forward Jack Watts has travelled to Melbourne as an emergency.
