In the first of three line review segments, forwards coach Tyson Edwards and SANFL coach Garry Hocking review the performances of our forwards at the halfway point of the season…

With 11 out of 22 AFL games completed and nine of 12 SANFL matches elapsed, it's high time our traditional mid-season line reviews return.

And to get us underway, Tyson Edwards, new to the role of the Power's forwards coach in 2014, and SANFL coach Garry Hocking, run the rule over their players.

Edwards offers his thoughts on those forwards to have played at least four AFL games this season, while Hocking gives you his view on those who have spent most of the year so far with the Magpies.

For both the Power and the Magpies, the season has been productive up forward.

Each side leads its respective competition ladder with dominant scores for; both have lost just one game early in the season.

And with several injured forwards set to make their returns in the coming weeks, the competition for spots among this in-form group will be even higher...

2. Cam Hitchcock INJ
Games Power: 0,  Magpies: 4

Hitchcock has been injured, but when he was running early in the year he was a real creative forward for us. We want to see him go inside and play some contested footy when he comes back, but unfortunately he’s got a shin injury and won’t be seen for a few more weeks. -Garry Hocking
#6. Angus Monfries INJ
Games Power: 6,  Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 15.5 disposals (34.19% contested), 64.5% disp efficiency, 4.2 marks, 1.3 clearances, 3.8 tackles, 1.5 goals

Angus has been playing some really important roles for us. Defensively he’s very good and offensively we know what we get from him. He hits the scoreboard, is high in score involvements and is a really important member of the forward line group. Going forward we want to see him get back into the side and help us settle down our forward line. He started the year well, we’re looking forward to seeing him finish it off. -Tyson Edwards

#11. John Butcher
Games Power: 3,  Magpies: 7
AFL averages: 11 disposals (45.45% contested), 66.7% disp efficiency, 4.3 marks, 0.3 clearances, 1.7 tackles, 0.7 goals

Since coming back from the AFL, he’s been a regular goalkicking forward for us. He gets lots of shots on goals and works hard on his goalkicking skills. He acts as a good target for us, but also gives lots of good pressure as well. As the elder of our three main forwards, we’d like to see him take a little more leadership, particularly around Shaw and Harvey. We want to see him continue getting shots on goal and being confident in his technique. -Garry Hocking

#14. Paul Stewart INJ
Games Power: 2,  Magpies: 7
AFL averages: 16.5 disposals (24.24% contested), 78.8% disp efficiency, 5.5 marks, 0 clearances, 2 tackles, 0 goals

Paul was playing some really good footy and got an opportunity to play the GWS game. He now has a knee injury for a few weeks which will keep him out of action. Between injury he’s played some really good football, and it’s the stuff we want him to produce. That’s what the match committee liked about him when he played and what we want to see him do when he comes back. -Garry Hocking

#20 Chad Wingard
Games Power: 10,  Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 15.5 disposals (81% contested), 72.7% disp efficiency, 4.3 marks, 1.1 clearances, 2.7 tackles, 2.4 goals

Chad’s been playing some really good football, and I guess in the way he plays he’s a match winner who has been able to impact games and has done it again this year so far. I’d like to see him keep his effort in all areas of the game, and his energy really high. He’s able to have real impact for us when he does that. -Tyson Edwards

#22. Mason Shaw
Games Power: 0,  Magpies: 2

Mason just came back into the SANFL team after over two months with a wrist injury. Before that he was looking really dangerous for us during the pre-season. Because it was a wrist problem he wasn’t able to work on his craft, but he’s been working pretty well in the last few weeks and he was the second-highest in our GPS numbers against Central – so he can hit midfield numbers there. A focus for him is competing one-on-one as well as getting up the ground and presenting. -Garry Hocking

#28. Jay Schulz
Games Power: 11,  Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 11.9 disposals (42.02% contested), 74% disp efficiency, 6.2 marks, 0.1 clearances, 2.3 tackles, 2.8 goals

Schulzy is right up there in the Coleman, but the important thing for me is his effort in other areas has got him in that position. His work around the ground, up the ground, and getting up and back is vital for us. He’s obviously a leader in our forward line and I lean on him a fair bit, he’s been a real rock down there forward for us. He’s one of two talls we’ve had down there for most of the year. We’ve tried Jackson Trengove up forward as a third tall a little to give Schulz the comfort to go up the ground. All we want from Jay though is exactly what we’ve been getting. -Tyson Edwards

#31. Mitch Harvey
Games Power: 0,  Magpies: 9

Mitch had an inconsistent start to the year with his forward play and of course he was forced to play a cameo role in the ruck at times. He’s been able to show real good, consistent effort the last four to five weeks with both his rucking and forward play. He’s just got to compete and contest up forward for us. His main area of improvement will be in running out four consistent quarters. -Garry Hocking

#32. Jake Neade
Games Power: 1,  Magpies: 8
AFL averages: 8 disposals (25% contested), 62.5% disp efficiency, 4 marks, 0 clearances, 1 tackles, 1 goal

Neadey’s ability to break into the AFL team has been about his ability to pressure and harassing the opposition’s ball movement. I reckon he’s been knocking on the AFL door for 4-5 weeks through the pressure he puts on, the way he sets up our score involvements and going forward we want to see him continue that. -Garry Hocking

#39 Justin Westhoff
Games Power: 11,  Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 17.2 disposals (34.3% contested), 71.4% disp efficiency, 7.5 marks, 0.3 clearances, 2 tackles, 1.2 goals

We use Westy everywhere, but this year more than most we’ve used him forward more. He had good form early and he’s been in form most weeks – he hasn’t hit the scoreboard in recent weeks in the way he’d like to – but not through lack of effort. With him and Schulzy as our main talls, they do rely on each other a fair bit. -Tyson Edwards

#41. Brendon Ah Chee
Games Power: 0,  Magpies: 7

Arch has had a couple of roles as a defensive forward and he’s been able to get those jobs done and maintain his own ability to win the ball. He had a slower start to the year but has worked very hard to get into that defensive role and learn to win the footy. We’ve liked his ability to go from a 10-12 possession player to, hopefully a 17-20 or 20-25-possession player. More disposals, quality possession and consistent work rate is what we’re looking for going forward. -Garry Hocking

#43. Karl Amon
Games Power: 0,  Magpies: 9

Karl has come on and played forward and wing and come on with his development. He’s shown us that he’s going to be a really good player for us going forward. He’s had some sickness and a little bit of injury, which has hurt the consistency of his performance a little bit. We’d like to see him spend more time inside like Kane Mitchell did and work his way up to around 20 quality possessions. -Garry Hocking

#46. Sam Gray
Games Power: 4,  Magpies: 5
AFL averages: 13 disposals (36.15% contested), 84.6% disp efficiency, 3 marks, 1.5 clearances, 2.7 tackles, 1 goal

Sam’s had a couple of games in the AFL side, which has been really good. He’s a smart footballer who brings very good pressure up forward. His first game was very good offensively, although he hasn’t quite had that impact lately, if he keeps doing the things he does well the scoreboard result will come. His energy and intensity in the forward line is a highlight for me. -Tyson Edwards
