PORT Adelaide vice-captain Brad Ebert thinks greater composure will help the club bounce back against Greater Western Sydney on Saturday.

Port's disastrous 34-point defeat to the Giants in round 19, 2012 remains the club's only failure against the side.

That loss spelt the end of the tenure of coach Matthew Primus, who was replaced by Ken Hinkley.

Hinkley described last weekend's 64-point loss to the Western Bulldogs as the most disappointing during his time at the helm, and he slammed the playing group's effort.

Ebert said the Power had to be strong at the contest and strong in possession to ensure they rebounded against the Giants.

"Kenny and Boaky (captain Travis Boak) have talked about how disappointing it was and talked about that perceived effort," he said.

"We're going out there to win and to do it right, but when those sorts of things get questioned it's hard to answer [why it's not there] because it's really a non-negotiable.

"It comes down to that contested ball and when the ball's there it's your turn to go and your turn to win it.

"We had the opportunity to win a fair few of those balls on the weekend, but sometimes it just comes down to the fact that we fumbled at critical times … and then that comes across as not being strong enough.

"With the four weeks left we've got an opportunity to make amends and really improve on those sort of areas."

While Port's finals hopes have ended, the Giants remain a chance to sneak into the top eight.

It would be a debut finals appearance for the League's newest side but Port has the chance to smash that dream on Saturday.

However Ebert said there would be no satisfaction in ending the ambition of a rival side, rather the motivation lay in self-improvement.

"I don't know if I've necessarily looked at it like that, it's more just about what we can control and for us, what we can control is that effort and that intensity," he said.

"Things will come off that."

Ebert is raising awareness of alcohol and drug-fuelled violence as an ambassador for the Sammy D Foundation, which will be the match-day sponsor of Saturday's game at Adelaide Oval.

The joint vice-captain's work with the charity helped earn him last year's John McCarthy Award for service to the community.
