PORT ADELAIDE welcomes tonight’s fixture announcement confirming the Power will travel to Perth’s Optus Stadium to take on the West Coast Eagles on the evening of Good Friday, April 19, next year.

Port Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas says the marquee clash is an exciting opportunity for his club.

“Playing the reigning premiers West Coast on a standalone Friday night public holiday is an incredible opportunity to showcase our club across the nation,” said Mr Thomas.

“The rivalry now between the two clubs is enormous, especially after the two classic games we have played in recent times. Fair to say we hope we are on the winning side this time around.”

Mr Thomas understood there may still be some negativity around the Easter fixture but urged supporters to embrace the positives.

“I’m looking forward to speaking with West Coast CEO Trevor Nisbett as to how we can make this a great event that benefits the broader community through a charitable cause,” Mr Thomas said.

“I understand there may be some objections to the game on religious grounds but we believe there is general widespread acceptance that people can practice their religious beliefs and also attend or watch a game of footy on TV on Good Friday.

“The AFL, through North Melbourne, have already demonstrated that football on Good Friday can be done in a respectful manner.

“Our Members and supporters still have a choice, but I genuinely believe it is a great opportunity for us to showcase our club on the national stage and I’m confident our people will understand this.”
