PORT Adelaide AFL development coach and SANFL assistant Jacob Surjan reviews the performance of every Magpie in the SANFL last Friday night.

PETER JACKSON PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Brendon Ah Chee
He’s had a super pre-season and he’s really taking that form into the way he’s playing at the moment. He’s been our most consistent midfielder probably for the last two weeks. He’s looking good and if he keeps it up, will hopefully get an opportunity to step up.

REVIEWS

Sam Colquhoun
It was Sam’s second game back from knee injury - he looked really composed with the ball and his run was back. His kicking efficiency was really good, he hit his targets which was a big part of his game and hopefully he’ll be ready to go back into the AFL side soon.

Andrew Moore
It was Moorey’s first game back from a hamstring injury. He looked really composed with the ball. We spoke about getting his high speed back up, which is an area of improvement for him, but his ability to win 50/50 ball is really good and he played his role for the team. He’s definitely around the mark for selection.

Kane Mitchell
His ability to run and create link-up for us is vital. He’s an elite runner and some of the patterns he ran on the weekend were of AFL standard and quality, and that’s all we expect from Mitch. He was one of our better players on the weekend.

Nathan Krakouer
Krak was good, he was a bit of a utility for us. He played midfield, forward and back, he kicked a few goals. His composure and his elite vision and his ability to use the ball is first class. He’s still got a few areas to work on to get ready for AFL, like his accountability and his AFL endurance (running capacity). He’s in his third game back from injury, so we expect him to keep improving this week.

Aaron Young
Youngy played a really solid game. He got tagged and we gave him the opportunity to stay in the midfield and work through that, which he did – and that’s a real credit to him. He plays at an elite level, week in, week out.

Tom Logan
It was a stock-standard game for Tommy Logan – just tough, hard, Port Adelaide football. All we ask from Loges is to offer great leadership to a young group, which he provides. He’s courageous as always and just plays the selfless team role.

Steven Summerton
Summo had a really good day – he played in the centre half-forward and throughout the midfield. His ability to win the ball on the outside and the inside is really vital to our team and he brings great leadership to our group. We were really happy with the way he went about it.

Logan Austin
Logan is a young kid in his first year, and as a key backman he played really well with 19 disposals. He dropped a few marks which is an area for improvement for him, but you put that down to first game of league football. He’s just going to get better and better with more game time - he’s one really exciting prospect we’ve got coming through.

Cam O’Shea
It was a solid game for Cam, solid without being brilliant. He played his role, took a couple of really courageous marks going back with the play and his ability to run and provide link up for us is really vital.

Sam Gray
Sam Gray was good, he played as a pressure forward. He went through the midfield a little bit, but if he’s going to want to play AFL footy then he’s going to have to play that real pressure forward, ‘Jake Neade-style’ of game. He did provide that, he’s going to get better and better as he understands his role a little bit more. At SANFL level he’s a very, very good player and he brings lots of life and speed to our group.

Darcy Byrne-Jones
Darcy played across the half back line. He was very composed with the ball, but he still needs a little bit of work on his kicking. This is his second year into the program now and you feel very comfortable giving Darcy a job, because he’s going to get it done. That’s what we like about him – he’s getting harder and tougher and we see him being a real prospect in the years to come.

Louis Sharrad
Louis plays that tough inside role for us. He put a lot of blocks on and did a lot of selfless, team things on the weekend which is all we expect from Louis.

Jesse Palmer
Jesse Palmer is a young, country boy from Victoria in his first year. He had his first taste of league footy on the weekend; his first game for the prison bars, and he acquitted himself quite well. He’s a tough nut so his tackling pressure was really good. He just needs to finish off in front of goals. He missed two set shots and he’s known for his goal kicking.

Mitchell Harvey
Mitch probably played out of position – his secondary role is to play in the ruck, but his first role is to play as a forward, as he’s a big key forward. But without Jarrad Redden there, we had to play him as a ruck, and he really dominated. He had 30 hit outs, 14 disposals, kicked 1.1 from set shots as a ruckman, and he gave our midfields first use around the ball. He’s learning another craft and has been really positive. Hopefully he can keep developing himself and keep developing the roles that we need him to play for us. I was really impressed with his game.

John Butcher
Johnny Butcher had a great game. He kicked four gaols and looked really confident with his set shot goal kicking, which we all know is an area of improvement for him. He looked really confident and we were really confident in the way he was going about his football – he was attacking the ball in the air and on the ground, and that’s all we ask from Butcher – is to give us a contest and we couldn’t be more happy with how he went.

Tom Clurey
Clurey had a big job on South Adelaide’s key forward Brett Eddy. I think he (Eddy) only kicked one or two goals for the game and Tommy really put him away and took a few one-on-one contested marks against Eddy which is a great effort. He needs to keep working on his ability to run off in attack and after he’s made his good defensive effort and get involved in the offence for us. We as coaching staff were really pleased with his game.

Sam Russell
He just keeps improving. He had a few injury concerns last year with his hamstring, but all we ask from him is to play in the Tom Logan mould - just a tough, play-your-role backman, and he’s accepted that role. He’s started to play some really good football defensively, and he’s starting to get involved in our offence as well.

Johann Wagner
Johann was good. We need to him to keep developing and know our game plan. He has got elite speed, and when he plays forward, he’s a very tough match up, because people don’t know how to go with him and they don’t know how to use their body against him because he is a bit quick and slippery. He’s going to give a lot of headaches to other clubs going forward. He just needs to keep working on his defensive actions.

Jonno Ross
It was his first game – he’s only 19 years old, he’s 197cm and has been in our system since under-13s with the Magpies. There was a lot of reward for effort on the weekend for him. He had a super preseason, played a few league games and we needed a ruck-forward with Reddo out and obviously Mitch going into play the ruck. I thought he played really well for his first game. He kicked the first goal and is just going to get better – we’re really pleased he got the opportunity to play.

Karl Amon
Out of all our AFL guys playing for the Magpies, he was probably the most disappointing. He said he didn’t feel himself in the game; he couldn’t get any ball or movement going. We just spoke about how when you’re in that position you’ve just got to go and play your role for the team and just do the defensive actions, because defensive actions can get you involved in the game. It was a good learning experience for him and hopefully he’ll bounce back this week.
